Explain how patterns of exchanging commodities, peoples, diseases, and ideas around the Atlantic World developed after European contact and shaped North American colonial-era societies.
- Today we will first share some of our thesis statements. Do they address what the impact was (positive, negative)?
- Then we will try writing some topic sentences, or sub-theses, that will introduce each paragraph. These should clearly express the main idea of the paragraph (how commodities, people/ideas, or disease shaped North American colonial-era societies).

Extended contact with Native Americans and Africans fostered a debate among European religious and political leaders about how non-Europeans should be treated, as well as evolving religious, cultural, and racial justifications for the subjugation of Africans and Native Americans.

- On one side, Bartolome de Las Casas argued that the Indians were completely human and morally equivalent to Europeans, so enslaving them was not justified.
- On the other side, another priest, Juan Gines de Sepulveda, argued that Indians were less than human. Hence, they benefitted from serving the Spaniards in the encomienda system.
